It lies on the Outer Rim of the Nanda Devi Sanctuary. It was first surveyed by TG Longstaff in 1907. Eric Shipton surveyed it from West in 1931. First serious attempt was made by BP Goodfellow J Buz (UK), in 1944. Finally a Swiss team under André Roch made the first ascent in 1947 through East Ridge

Chandannager Mountaineering foundation (CMA) organised THE PEAK NANDAGHUNTI(6309M) under the leadership of SUMAN GUHA on AUG SEPT 2010. Climbing leader was SUJOY MONDAL.INDIA (O9477150743). The rout was JOSHIMATH - SUBAIN village TRANJIT1,T-2, T3 , BC CAMP1 - CAMP2 - SUMMIT ATTAMPT.
